TJ Smith has been building things out of whatever was lying around since 1988. Legos, scrap wood, forts in the woods of Western Pennsylvania.

Think about the last time you walked in somewhere new. A library, a museum, a coffee shop in a town you were only passing through. Before you read a single sign, you’d already made up your mind. The light, the sound, the smell, the way it felt just to stand there. Trust it, or don’t. That’s the moment TJ works in.

Some days he’s guiding leaders who never meant to become the creative director, digging for the root problem before anyone makes anything pretty. Other days he’s making murals, installations, and identities for towns, museums, parks, and the people who keep them running. (The kid with the Lego bin approves.) In between, he shares the thinking behind the making, in talks, workshops, and his newsletter.

It all runs through SmithBorn, his practice in Grand Junction, Colorado, built for the places people go and the ones who keep them open. Fifteen years in, one thing keeps holding true. People remember what they feel, long after they forget what they were told. So he designs for the nervous system, not the eye.

TJ puts down roots wherever he lands: AIGA Reno, Creative Mornings Asheville, the Grand Junction Creative District board. He co-founded Rural is Rad and the creative collective Secret Menu, because he’d rather raise every ship in town than just his own. Off the clock, he’s under tall trees with his wife, or halfway up a tall rock, looking for a better view.
